Politics up to the Minute

Thursday's Obama Talking Points

Obama for America Daily Talking Points
April 16, 2008

Tonight, we saw a real choice between the old politics of point-scoring and distraction and a politics that focuses on bringing us together to actually solve the challenges we talk about every single election.  Continuing the theme of her campaign, Senator Clinton used every single opportunity she had to launch misleading attack after misleading attack against Barack Obama, which is why polls show that most Americans think she's running the most negative campaign and don't believe she's trustworthy.

Tonight, Barack Obama rejected the politics of division and distraction and spoke about the issues that actually matter in people's lives, like how he plans to end the war in Iraq, cut middle-class taxes, help people stay in their homes, and provide a secure retirement for our seniors. That's why Obama has earned the trust of millions of Americans who want fundamental change in Washington so we can make progress on issues that we talk about year after year after year.

Senator Clinton's false negative attacks on Senator Obama are exactly the kind of say-anything, do-anything politics that the American people are tired of and that have distracted us from solving the problems hardworking families actually face every day. Senator Obama wants to end the politics of division and distraction in Washington so we can bring about real change for working Americans.

America can't afford another four years of the Bush policies, and that's what John McCain is offering, which is why we'll come together to bring about real change in November. But the problem isn't just failed Bush policies, it's the failed system in Washington that produces those policies. Unless we have a President who can bring this country together and take on the special interests, nothing will really change. And Senator Obama is the one candidate who can show that kind of leadership.

While both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton have pledged that they won't raise taxes on middle class families, Obama is the only candidate who's proposed a middle class tax cut that will save families $1,000 a year and eliminate income taxes entirely for seniors making under $50,000. He has also proposed investments in our infrastructure and green energy sector that will create millions of good-paying jobs.

Senator Obama knows that his highest obligation as Commander-in-Chief will be to protect the American people. He will end the war in Iraq – a war he opposed from the start – and take the fight to the terrorists plotting against us in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He will also refocus on the other threats of the 21st century – nuclear weapons and violent extremism; poverty and climate change; genocide and disease.
