Much is being made about Mitt Romney’s answer to Chuck Todd regarding his veep pick allegedly pointing to Paul Ryan:

CHUCK TODD: “What do you want your running mate to say about you? What do you want your selection to say about what kind of president you’re going to be?”

MITT ROMNEY: “I don’t think I have anything for you on the VP running mate. Other than I– I certainly expect to have a person that has a strength of character, a vision for the country that adds something to the political discourse about the direction of the country. I happen to believe this is a defining election for America, that we’re going to be voting for what kind of America we’re going to have.”

Sure, taken literally, that description better fits Ryan’s profile than that of some of the others thought to be under consideration.

But it is just as likely — or better — that Romney has settled on another choice, is aware of the pressure from the right to tap Ryan, and is laying the groundwork to sell the reform bona fides of his actual pick.

Meanwhile, the quadrennial flurry of speculation over a last-minute John Danforth-style pick is starting to blow, with Judd Gregg and Bob Gates floats.
