Obama Release on Jean Carnahan Endorsement

Former Senator Jean Carnahan Endorses Obama for PresidentST. LOUIS , MO — Former Senator Jean Carnahan today joined current Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill and announced her endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for President, citing his ability to bring people of all different political beliefs and backgrounds together to achieve real change.

"While I know and admire all the Democrats running for president, I am convinced that Barack Obama is the candidate best able to unite our nation and restore our moral leadership in the world," said Carnahan.  "As president, he will be a strong voice and a powerful force for change during this critical time in our nation's history. Barack Obama is an inspirational leader, who embodies the ideals of our democracy and the hopes of a new century.  I heartily endorse him for president of the United States."

"I'm honored to have the endorsement of Senator Carnahan," said Obama.  "Senator Carnahan's achievements during her many decades of public service are truly inspiring.  As an activist, writer, First Lady of Missouri, and a United States Senator, Jean Carnahan demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to improving the lives of the children and working families of Missouri – never wavering in her efforts to improve access to healthcare, create more jobs, and improve the quality of schools. Her support will be a tremendous asset in our efforts to bring change to America."

Jean Carnhan was the first woman to serve as a United States Senator from Missouri, serving from 2001-2002.  Since she left the Senate, she has continued her work on behalf of Missouri's families as a political activist, writer, and speaker.  In addition to Sen. McCaskill, Sen. Carnahan joins her son, Congressman Russ Carnahan, Congressman Lacy Clay, State Auditor Susan Montee, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley and several other current and former elected officials who have endorsed Barack Obama for President.
