McCain tells the press corps before heading to San Diego: “I was very saddened and disappointed to see that kind of comment about a person who is an American war hero, who built our party and who served our party so well for so long. In the years when Gov Romney was claiming that he didn't want to go back to the Regan-Bush years, Bob Dole was leading our party….I think Gov. Romney should apologize to Bob Dole for a statement such as that and again share the appreciation that all Americans have for Bob Dole, who served his country with great bravery and courage both in war and in peace. This is no way to end this campaign by attacking a genuine American war hero.”

Romney said Tuesday morning: "It's probably the last person I'd would have wanted write a letter for me…I think there's a lot of folks who tend to think that maybe John McCain's race is a bit like Bob Dole's race." Watch it above.

After Fox, Romney with somewhat different words about Sen. Dole to Laura Ingraham here.

Dole sent letter to Limbaugh Monday scolding him for recent marathon blows to McCain, telling him to lighten up for the good of the party.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden responds: “We have to recognize the lessons of past campaigns. The governor has been making the case that this is a change election that requires a nominee from our party from outside of Washington. The race has crystallized as a choice between a Washington insider and a governor who hopes to change Washington and its status-quo mindset.”
