ON JUDGE SOTOMAYOR'S STATEMENTS REFLECTING ON WISDOM GAINED FROM HIS EXPERIENCES IN 1987:
"Mine was the first episode of all out warfare and since then the administrations have become a lot more savvy about what the nominees are supposed to do and say."
ON WHETHER SOTOMAYOR WILL BE CONFIRMED:
"The outcome in these things often has little to do with what the people say at these hearings. They will tell you at the hearings that they will follow the law; they don't make it up, and so forth. Then, when they get confirmed, they immediately stop following the law and start making it up."
ON WHETHER THE COURT MAY CHANGE BY SOTOMAYOR'S CONFIRMATION:
"I don't think so.I've heard people say she will be to the left of Souter, but I don't know what that means."
