Excerpts from McCain's Post-Petraeus Interview with Fox
On Clinton saying it's irresponsible to keep troops in Iraq without progress:
"Well I think she doesn't understand the situation on the ground or the success that the surge has obtained--recognizing that it's very long and very tough and she doesn't, I don't think, the consequences of failure--neither she nor Senator Obama."
"The point is if that we have a withdrawal along the lines of what she and Senator Obama have been advocating it will lead to a disaster. There will be genocide, there will be chaos and we will have to be back either there or somewhere else in the region."
On if American is closer to the beginning or end of the War in Iraq:
"We are much closer to the quote end of U.S. tragedy. The tragedy is the loss of brave young Americans and their sacrifice and those numbers have been going down dramatically. Now in recent days there has been a spike up tragically but there is no doubt that all the indicators-as general Petraeus briefed the Arms Services Committee this morning--that there has been significant progress.”
“The conversation about how long America is going to be there is I think not the real argument or the concern the American people have. Americans care about the sacrifice. If we can have the Iraqis as they are beginning to take over more and more responsibilities."
On how the Secret Service meeting went:
"A good meeting where we work out the modalities of their providing their security. And we expect to have it in place very soon."
On if Secret Service will change his campaigning style:
"I think its hard but the Secret Service has already been very cooperative with trying to help me maintain the kind of contact--my concern about the secret service and it may be unfair was that I do best in close interaction with people. “
On Senator Rockefeller's comments:
"I don't understand that but I would call upon Senator Obama to repudiate Senator Rockefeller's remarks. If he is surrounded by people like that, than I think he should have a direct repudiation. I frankly am unfamiliar with that rhetoric by a us senator."
"I do believe that if Senator Obama is going to maintain the type of campaign that he says that he is--a respectful campaign--and this is one of his closest and strongest supporters, than I think he should repudiate Senator Rockefeller. Immediately."
On Obama's ‘100 years' comments about McCain:
"It's not respectful of the commitment that Senator Obama made. He continues to say it. Anyone who reads the context of my remarks knows that I was talking about after the war--a security relationship...so it's really a direct contradiction of Senator Obama's stated purpose of conducting a respectful campaign. And I think the American people will evaluate that."
