Email from Fla. House Speaker Marco Rubio
I have invited many of you to a breakfast this morning to meet with Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Governor Huckabee is now in either first or second place in virtually every early primary state, including Florida.
I want to address a issue you are sure to hear about today. Over the last few hours, some of his rivals have circulated a letter he signed in 2002 when he was Governor of Arkansas. In that letter, Gov. Huckabee advocated for the lifting of the U.S. Embargo on Cuba.
Five years ago, when Governor Huckabee signed that letter, he had very limited knowledge of the embargo, and sent the letter on behalf of farmers in that state who asked him to sign it.
Since then however he has learned more about the Cuba issue and in particular about how important it is to keep the current embargo in place. So much so that today he is the ONLY candidate for President that has committed to :
1. Veto any legislation that will lift the embargo;
2. Fully implement the Helms-Burton Act: and
3. The indictment of Raul Castro for the murder of the Brothers to the Rescue pilot.
For those of use passionate about the issue of Cuba, this occasion should serve as a reminder that there are many Americans who today support lifting the embargo because they have never heard the full story. Once presented with all the facts, I believe most Americans would support the embargo.
I for one want a President that comes to that conclusion, not because he is running for President, but rather because when presented with all the facts he truly believes it is the right thing to do.
Governor Huckabee is such a man.
