Politics up to the Minute

Details from T-Paw's Address at Iowa Republican Party's Annual Fall Event

He made a reference to a line from “Talladega Nights” and referred to his spouse as his “red-hot, smokin' wife.”

He stole and adopted a line from Barack Obama by asking the crowd, “Are you fired up and ready to fight back?” He used versions of that refrain as his signature phrase.

He called the Democrats' health care plan a “liberal monstrosity.”

He talked about how similar Iowa and Minnesota are.

He said, “The only thing growing faster than the federal debt is Chris Matthews' man-crush on Barack Obama.”

He bragged on his record of spending restraint and health care reform in Minnesota--and his ability to thrive in a Blue state.

He reprised one of his pet lines, saying Congress was acting like “a manure spreader in a windstorm.”

He talked about the importance of keeping God in public life.

He told stories about Michael Jordan and Brett Favre.

His delivery was smooth and confident.

The crowd was respectful and appreciative but did nothing to break their typical Iowa reserve.

Afterward, Pawlenty got a lot of favorable reactions and encouragement to run for president from the audience of activists.
