I had long thought (and maybe even predicted on TV) that the fiscal cliff drama would end not only with a grand bargain but with a big White House ceremony at which the President would hand signing pens to John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, amidst much semi-stilted joking about strange bedfellows and common ground.
I also believed that this ceremony and the legislation that spawned it would create momentum that would lead to bipartisan legislative progress on immigration, tax code and entitlement overhauls, and a long overdue national energy policy.
Instead, the fiscal cliff package was signed by an auto pen; President Obama wasn’t even present as the bill became a law. New gun legislative proposals are unlikely to cause an outbreak of DC comity. Which leaves us back waiting for the Martian invasion to change the dynamics.
