The Ledes

New York Times: “July’s job growth was higher than economists had been expecting, but still signifies the economy is just barely treading water.”

Washington Post: “The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its July jobs report this morning — an assessment that didn’t exactly show considerable growth in the economy over the past month. And from a political perspective, that means one thing: President Obama is running out of time.”

Politico: “The better than expected jobs number will give the White House some breathing room and allow the president, who will speak later today, to argue that the employment picture is improving even if it is not good enough.”

AP: “U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, a hopeful sign after three months of sluggish hiring.”

Reuters: “Employers in July hired the most workers in five months, but an increase in the jobless rate to 8.3 percent will probably keep expectations of additional monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve intact.”

Bloomberg: “Payrolls in the U.S. climbed more than forecast in July, boosted by a pickup in employment at automakers, even as the jobless rate unexpectedly rose to a five-month high.”
