New York Times: “Mitt Romney leveled a searing attack against Newt Gingrich’s character and raised pointed questions about his ability to lead during a debate here Monday evening, taking urgent steps to slow Mr. Gingrich’s rising momentum in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination.”

Washington Post: “Mitt Romney, vying with Gingrich for front-runner status…quickly moved to criticize Gingrich’s tenure as House speaker and his work for mortgage lender Freddie Mac, with Gingrich shooting back that Romney’s claim that he had worked as a lobbyist was a ‘false charge.’”

Politico: “In the first minutes of the debate, Romney quickly went on the offensive, accusing the man who routed him in last weekend’s South Carolina primary of being unscrupulous, unreliable and simply unelectable.”

WSJ: “Coming as Mr. Gingrich shows signs of overtaking Mr. Romney in Florida, as he did Saturday in South Carolina’s primary, the comments marked both a risk and a sharp departure for Mr. Romney.”
