Romney campaign issues unusual missive to the media framing the “fire” fire.

Read it below.

Please take a moment and review the transcripts and videos from today’s event. Our opponents are taking Gov. Romney’s comments completely out of context. Governor Romney was talking about firing insurance companies if you don’t like their service. That is something that most Americans agree with.

President Obama and Obamacare reinforce a system where Americans can’t fire their insurance companies, even if they want to. Mitt Romney disagrees with that. He believes Americans should be able to fire their insurance companies if they don’t like the service they receive. Free enterprise is being put on trial by President Obama. And their first witness is Newt Gingrich.

Here are Gov. Romney’s remarks:

Mitt Romney: I want people to be able to own their own insurance if they wish to. And to buy it for themselves and perhaps keep it the rest of their life and to choose among different policies offered from companies across the nation. I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone doesn’t give me the good service I need I want to say ‘You know, I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.’ So, that’s one thing I would change. Later at the Hudson media availability, Governor Romney said:

Mitt Romney: Oh you saw, I was talking about insurance companies. We like to be able to get rid of insurance companies that don’t give us the service that we need. I do not want to live in a world where we have Obamacare telling us which insurance we have to have, which doctor we can have, which hospital we go to. I believe in a setting as I described this morning where people are able to choose their own doctor, choose their own insurance company. If they do not like their insurance company or their provider, they can get rid of them. That is the way America works. I know free enterprise is on trial and we have a president who really does not believe in the rights of people to do that, but i believe in the right of people to get rid of an insurance company they do not want (Mitt Romney, Remarks in Hudson, NH, 1/9/12). Romney's rivals in both parties are doing their best to yank the quote from context, which is beyond absurd. But the Huntsman campaign line — that the errant statement demonstrates the Bay Stater's propensity for gaffes that stick and, thus, weaken him as a general election candidate — has got some legitimate legs.
