At Monday's briefing, PressSec says the White House cannot play intermediary between the Speaker and GOP Sens.

PressSec: "It is not our job to negotiate between [Boehner] and Senate Republicans."

Carney adds Boehner "was for [the payroll tax cut] before he was against it."

Carney reads prepared statement on death of North Korean dictator: "The United States is closely monitoring events in the aftermath of Kim John Il's death."

Discussing Biden's comments that "the Taliban is not our enemy, per se," Carney asserts "elimination of the Taliban is not the issue. The number one issue is to disrupt, dismantle and ultimately defeat al-Qaeda."

Carney on inclusion of Keystone provision in the payroll tax package: "We accepted it, Senate Democrats accepted it because that is part of what compromise means. Sometimes you have to take things that you don't want."
