Bennett Accuses Jeffress of “Bigotry”

Book of Virtue Man at Values Voter Summit rebukes Friday words of Perry introducer and effectively calls for Mormon-Evangelical truce.

Romney, referencing Perry’s on-stage reaction to Jeffress, “Speaking of hitting it out of the park, how about that Bill Bennett!”

Bennett: “Do not give voice to bigotry. Do not give voice to bigotry. I would say to Pastor Jeffress: You stepped on and obscured the words of Perry and Santorum and Cain and Bachmann and everyone else who has spoken here. You did Rick Perry no good, sir, in what you had to say.”

The Romney campaign played this very smart. The silence of "no comment" Friday in the immediate aftermath, and then Romney took the high road in elliptical but firm remarks repudiating Jeffress, with an implicit (but clear) shot at Perry. Another sign of the maturity and sure-footedness of Team Romney.
