Economy adds 117,000 jobs in July, beating expectations, as unemployment rate slips down from 9.2% in June.

Halperin's Take

This is not a horrendous number politically (beating expectations was essential for the White House), but as analysts dig into the numbers, the fact will remain that no one can crow about where the employment situation stands. And/but ironically, the overall numbers are good enough that Washington won't be shocked and shamed into spending August in an extraordinary effort to jump-start job growth.
