Obama Calls for More Pressure

In White House statement, asks citizens to let Congress know they want debt dilemma solved, including by Tweet.

President suggests he would support trigger on second round of cuts, but with "balance"  -- a/k/a new revenue.

Highlights:

GOP trying to pass a bill that will "force us to relive this crisis...it does not solve the problem."

Two parties aren't "miles apart." "The power to solve this is in our hands."

There are "plenty of ways" to get out of "this mess."

Again asks Americans to call their Congressional leaders..."keep the pressure on Washington."

Halperin's Take

Whatever happens in the House, Obama needs two things to happen in quick succession that he can't control. First, he needs McConnell and Reid to reach an agreement about a way forward. Then he needs Cantor to accept effectively turning the floor of the House over to Nancy Pelosi -- in order to pass a bill with plenty of Democratic votes. Whether those personal turns, coupled with congressional procedural rules, can happen fast enough to meet the 8/2 deadline is a truly open question. The president's statement did not appear to do much to hasten the second; the first is a surer thing.
