This would seem to end any realistic chance the Gang had to impact this debate. Coburn was essential to give cover to get a deal that had tax increases in it. Of course, the Biden talks have somewhat supplanted the Gang’s work, but not as much as the conventional wisdom had it. This isn’t a death knell for the grand bargain, but, to mix the metaphor, the Fat Lady is warming up.
