Conservative columnist says he won’t support ex-ambassador because of his POTUS “plotting” and “naked ambition.”
Before he has even launched his campaign officially, Huntsman and his advisers are going to have to decide if they must engage quickly on the meme that his service as ambassador to China is disqualifying for the Republican nomination. Huntsman previewed his general approach to defusing this issue in his South Carolina commencement speech over the weekend. But the relative softness of the answer (about national service and the president being president of all the people) and his general lack of red-meat rhetoric, creates a vacuum into which Erickson, and surely others, will rush. Aides to other Republican hopefuls believe Huntsman's service is in fact an impregnable barrier for him. More likely, he can talk his way out of it, but the question is: can he wait to get more aggressive on this front, if the drip drip drip of skepticism turns into a torrent?
