Diplomat Chris Stevens to be dispatched in near future, officials say Tuesday.
There are a lot of variables at play in Libya, but none is as important as the question of the true nature of the rebels. In Egypt, it was clear to US policymakers (and the world) that the anti-government fervor was powered by a desire for democracy. Plus, America knew the Egyptian military could serve as a stable transition to a more representative form of government. In Libya, the US is dependent on the rebels turning out to be in favor of stability, democracy, and all those other values we cherish. Stevens is going to have to figure out who to support and how in a big hurry.
