Sestak and Toomey clash over Palin, Social Security, abortion and defense in first debate Wednesday.
On Palin:
Toomey: "I welcome the endorsements that I've had."
Toomey: "I welcome all allies."
Sestak: Says he's concerned about "extreme candidates," like those that want to do away with the 14th amendment.
On Social Security:
Sestak: "I'm so opposed to privatizing Social Security."
Sestak: Says Toomey wants to "take the security out of Social Security."
Sestak: "He thinks all the answers are found on Wall Street."
Toomey: "I want to make this program last for future generations..." Says doing that requires "some changes."
Toomey: Hits Sestak for debt and spending.
Sestak: Asks Toomey why he's OK with "risking [Social Security] on the stock market."
Toomey: "Joe has no solutions for this."
Toomey: Says if he gets close to a solution, it's "Raise taxes ... cut benefits -- there are no other options."
Roe v. Wade:
Toomey: "I'm pro-life." Says he would accept a ban on abortions except in the cases of rape, incest.
Toomey: Says Sestak is "extreme" and "outside the mainstream" on the issue of abortion (specifically notes use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions).
Sestak: "Palin, Toomey, O'Donnell -- they all would like to overturn Roe v. Wade .... I don't think government should intervene."
Sestak: Says the views of O'Donnell and Palin are "extreme."
Sestak: "I voted against taxpayers funding it."
Toomey: Says Sestak was being dishonest.
On Second Amendment:
Sestak: Says he supports rights, wants safety.
Toomey: "Joe is seriously misremembering or ... being dishonest."
Military v. Civilian trials for terrorists
Toomey: Hits Sestak on civilian trials for terrorists.
Sestak: Calls on 9/11 experience at the Pentagon -- says "I want them put to death for what they did."
Too big to fail:
Toomey (on Wall Street): "That's the last place that taxpayers should have to bail out."
Education:
Sestak: "We have to invest in our youth." -- mentions Pell Grants.
Toomey: Says poor kids should have the opportunity to go to parochial schools.
Sestak: "I do support choice ... Charter Schools."
Sestak: "It's we the people, not we the marketplace."
Foreign policy:
Sestak: Says military option should be on "the back of the table."
Toomey: Says it's "unacceptable" and an "existential risk" for the U.S. to allow nuclear-armed Iran.
Sestak: Says number one danger is "our economic security."
Health care:
Toomey: "In time .... the government is gong to intervene between patients and their doctor."
Sestak: Says they "saved" Medicare.
Toomey: Says they are experiencing "rising costs causing employers to drop coverage."
