HALPERIN’S TAKE: Democrats feel in their bones that Barton’s gaffe is going to be the gift that gives straight through November and they are jumping on it before they do the usual extensive focus groups and polling.  But it is too early to tell if this is a defining grassroots moment, or more of an insider obsession.  It certainly does play into the “Republicans are for special interests” meme that killed the GOP during the Bush(-Cheney) years — and that Obama’s strategists have long believed heavily favors their man.
