Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Tuesday, July 14.
1. Watch the second day of Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings in the Senate Judiciary Committee. It’s the first day of questioning for the judge, so watch to see how she handles the inquiries and whether she gets any curve balls. Also watch to see if Republicans can continue to keep up their efforts to be pressing on the issues that matter to them and their base without doing any harm.
2. Watch President Obama out on the road today in Michigan for an announcement of new funding for community colleges. Watch to see if he can take control of the economy. It’s vital that he create a sense of national urgency on economic issues, as he focuses today on education and health care. Watch to see what he says and does.
3. Watch for new developments and details on Bush-Cheney era national security and civil liberties issues. There’s been lots of discussions about possible investigations. Watch to see if Dick Cheney speaks out and if we learn more about the details of the programs under fire. Also watch to see what the next steps are for the Obama administration and Democrats on the Hill to examine the brewing controversies.
