Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Friday, June 19.
1. Watch to see what happens in Iran and how the administration reacts. Pressure is growing for the administration to take a more active role in weighing in on the situation there. The New York Times and other sources have reported for the last two days that Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Clinton want to see a more aggressive and muscular public response coming from the administration. Watch to see if the White House changes its posture today or in the coming days.
2. Watch for new developments on health care reform. Democrats from three House committees will release their draft proposal today at 1 pm ET and Senate Democrats are still working on their plan. Watch to see if all this cost-cutting and movement toward a bipartisan compromise causes any discontent from members of the left who are already unhappy with some aspects of the emerging plan. Watch as the administration and congressional leaders try to hold things together.
3. Watch as the president gives one of those political comedy speeches tonight at the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner in Washington. Watch to see what kind of tone the president strikes there.
