Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Thursday, April 23.
1. Watch to see how the administration tries to control the message as the Obama presidency nears its 100th day, coming up next Wednesday, April 29. They’re trying to dismiss it as just a Hallmark holiday, but they know they also need to try to sway the coverage. Watch to see how the administration tries to create a narrative favorable to evaluating President Obama’s time in office so far.
2. Watch to see how the press covers the 100-day milestone. Some publications have already rolled out their 100 days coverage, so watch to see the competition there. Also watch to see if there are any downbeat assessments of the first 100 days; most so far have been pretty positive.
3. Watch Republicans and how they choose to assess Obama’s first 100 days. There are some indications that they’re going to go after Democrats on the Hill rather than the White House. But watch to see if anyone decides to aggressively take on the president from a partisan point of view and whether any traction develops from those arguments.
