Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Thursday, April 16.
1. Watch the president’s trip to Latin America. He’ll be in Mexico City today for the first visit by a U.S. president in a dozen years. Watch to see what images of the trip resonate back at home and what issues break through to an American public still very much focused on the economy.
2. Watch to see how Republicans evaluate how yesterday’s Tax Day tea parties went. They’re not being seen as the hugest success, though they are getting some media attention today. There’s some question about whether the party’s message operation is fully geared up, so watch to see how some people in the party say the operation went and what lessons they learned.
3. Watch the question of the bank stress tests and the banking industry in general. The administration has been showing a little bit of transparency — at least in intention — on those stress tests. But watch to see how much focus there is on what’s going on with the banks and what the administration plans to do on credit and the banks going forward.
