Mark Halperin’s Three Things

Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics today, April 14, 2009:

1.  President Obama gives a big speech on the economy today.  Watch to see if it gets a lot of coverage and see whether the bully pulpit is used effectively as a teaching moment for the nation in the war over defining Obama’s economic policies.

2.  Watch the dog.  The First Dog is being officially unveiled at the White House today.  Watch to see how much coverage that gets and whether it in fact gets more coverage than the president’s economic policies.

Watch to see which other story develops as a big sleeper political story.  There are two possibilities: whether Norm Coleman in Minnesota will face pressure to get out of the race and drop his planned legal appeals, and whether the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty might feel some of the same pressure.  Or another possibility is what’s going on with Obama’s cuba policy and whether the right will use this as a way to galvanize support in opposition to Obama and to make accusations about Obama’s policies.  Watch to see if this, along with what’s being reported about his potential Iran policies, will cause the right to raise its voice even louder in saying that they believe that the president’s foreign policies will not make the country safer.
