Mark Halperin’s Three Things

Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics today, April 10, 2009.

1.  Continue following the struggle off the Somali coast, where pirates are holding the captain of a US flagged container ship hostage.  This is leading lots of newscasts and  getting lots of attention, the top levels of the administration have been drawn into it.  Watch to see how long that story can crowd out other important news.

2.  Keep an ear to the fight going on between the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. There’s been lots of sniping this week which hasn’t broken into all of the media, but it’s still a big discussion in the blogosphere and on cable TV.  Watch to see what both sides do to accelerate that conflict or to tamp it down.

3. Continue following the controversy over whether the president bowed to the Saudi King while overseas, which is developing mostly on the internet and cable TV. It’s a trivial matter for most Americans to be sure, but also an example of conservatives using things like that to try to define him in a negative way for the first time in his national career. It threatens to revive patterns of the last two administrations which really created divisions in the country, certainly in Washington and the blogosphere.  Watch to see how that controversy develops.
