Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Wednesday, March 18.
1. Watch AIG CEO Edward Liddy testifying on Capitol Hill today. The hearing before a subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee begins at 10 am ET. Watch to see the theatrics in that hearing room and what happens in the room to tamp down the controversy or to pour kerosene on it. Either way, it’s likely to be the lead story on the network evening news shows tonight.
2. Watch how President Obama and his administration deal with the continued AIG controversy. Will they continue to express outrage but risk undermining any future attempts at bailouts? Or will they reverse course and try to defend this or at least try to characterize this situation with AIG as a necessary evil? Watch to see what the administration says today.
3. Watch how other players beyond the hearing room and the White House react to developments in the AIG story. In particular, watch how the media and Republican members of Congress respond. They have the capacity, in concert, to drive this story far beyond today. Watch to see what they do and say today.
