Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Thursday, March 5.
1. Watch the debate over health care reform. The White House is holding a summit on the issue today with more than 100 participants, some political insiders and some ordinary people. President Obama will deliver opening remarks at 1 pm ET. Watch as he begins his attempt to seriously define the problems facing the country and to propose workable solutions. Watch to see what comes out of today’s event and what the next steps seem to be.
2. Watch the debate over taxes that the administration is now engaged in. Will their ideas for raising taxes in a variety of ways get support from congressional Democrats? Treasury Secretary Geithner told lawmakers on the Hill yesterday that tax hikes on wealthy Americans will be necessary to reduce the ballooning budget deficit, a position that drew ire from Republicans. Watch to see how the debate continues today and beyond.
3. Watch the GOP as it tries to change the conversation in Washington. Republicans are trying to turn the media’s attention away from RNC Chair Michael Steele and Rush Limbaugh and toward its objections to the Obama agenda. Watch to see if they get closer to that goal today and in the coming days.
