Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Friday, February 27.
1. Watch President Obama’s announcement today about his plans to withdraw most U.S. troops from Iraq by August 2010. He’s set to speak at 11:45 am ET at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He’s already getting heat from the left about the proposal, which withdraws troops a bit more slowly than he promised during the campaign. It also leaves behind a larger ground force than some Democrats want. Watch to see what kind of reception his plan gets.
2. Watch the continued scrutiny of the details of the Obama budget. Watch to see which issues and programs are still talked about today and beyond.
3. Watch discussion about the size and scope of the Obama agenda. Some on the left think it’s not big enough. But there’s more concern on the right, with lots of commentary that the administration’s plans seek to do too much, too fast. Watch to see how the administration tries to control expectations and not let its goals be seen as too big or too small.
