“I Made a Mistake”


The New Hampshire GOP Senator and Commerce Secretary-designate pulls his name from consideration.

“It has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me.” Watch video here.

Says at press conference, “It really wasn’t a good fit.” Adds: “I realize that to withdraw at this point is unfair in many ways….” Watch video here.

“Bottom line, this is simply a bridge too far for me.”

Also holds afternoon conference call.

–“Clearly there are views that are different here, and we should have focused on them earlier.”

–Says he “went back and forth on it,” but “this is more a question of just being me.”

–Says he informed the White House of his decision early in the week, but declines to specify when.

–Calls Obama “an extraordinarily talented individual.”

–Says he doesn’t plan to run for re-election. “There are other things to do in life.”
