Mark Halperin’s Three Things

Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics for Wednesday, February 4.

1. Watch as the negotiations over the stimulus continue in the Senate. Watch to see if what emerges is a compromise that can get some Republican votes, or if Democrats are comfortable passing their own bill for the president to sign.
2. Watch President Obama’s announcement today at 11 am ET with Treasury Secretary Geithner. The president is expected to impose a $500,000 compensation cap on employees of financial services and auto companies getting bailout money. It’s a controversial announcement, so watch to see how Wall Street and Main Street respond to it.
3. Watch the continued fallout from Tom Daschle’s decision to pull out of the confirmation process for Health and Human Services Secretary. His tax issues, added to those of other Obama nominees including Geithner, have led to questions about whether the administration holds its nominees to a different standard than the one they’ve set in rhetoric. Watch to see if the press moves on from the story today or if questions linger for Press Secretary Gibbs and others in the administration.
