Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics for Wednesday, January 28.
- Watch to see just how many Republican votes President Obama’s stimulus plan can get in the House today. He met with the House and Senate GOP yesterday but seemed to make little headway in gaining support for the Democrat-authored bill. Despite last-minute changes to the bill last night by Senate Democrats, it appears unlikely that the plan will garner much GOP support. But still watch to see if the popular new president was able to convince any Republicans to go along with the plan.
- Watch the Obama-Biden visit to the Pentagon this afternoon to meet with Defense Secretary Gates and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The discussion will likely focus on the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Watch to see how the new administration stage-manages the symbolism of that important trip.
- Watch George Mitchell’s trip to the Middle East. Watch to see if his negotiations have any effect on the Gaza ceasefire. He’ll be meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Olmert and Palestinian President Abbas, but not with the leaders of Hamas, which controls Gaza. Watch to see what kind of progress he makes and where his itinerary takes him in this first foreign policy gambit of the Obama administration.
