Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics for Friday, January 23.
1. Barack Obama is making a big energy and environment announcement at the White house today— he’ll direct the EPA to consider allowing states to regulate automobile emissions and fuel efficiency. It will be his first big policy announcement as president. Watch to see how the world reacts, particularly the environmental sector, labor groups, and Capitol Hill.
2. Watch for shifts in the economy. There’s a big story in the New York Times today about the potential nationalization of major banks, so watch for other economic news and to see generally how the administration handles this major issue.
3. Lastly, it’s a car wreck but watch Governor Blagojevich. He’s in New York doing lots of media today as his impeachment trial is getting underway in Illinois. His media stops include “Good Morning America,” “The View” and “Larry King Live.” Keep an eye on that spectacle all day.
