Obama Praises Salazar Replacement Pick

The president-elect calls Gov. Ritter's selection Saturday of Denver Schools Chief Michael Bennet an "execellent choice" in a statement. "Michael Bennet perfectly reflects the qualities of the ruggedly independent state he has been chosen to serve." Full statement here. Announcement comes after current Sen. Canvassing Board Declares Franken Recount Winner

The Minnesota panel certifies the results of the recount Monday, finds Franken edged out incumbent Coleman by 225 votes. No election certificate can be issued for at least seven days, giving Coleman the opportunity to file a legal challenge. Coleman statement: "The actions today by the Canvassing Board are but the first step in what, unfortunately, will now have to be a longer process." Earlier: Minnesota’s supreme court rejects a Coleman request to count hundreds of absentee ballots from GOP-leaning areas. Permalink

Obama Talks Up Stimulus in Radio Address

The president-elect dubs his economic stimulus the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, says it will aim to create three million new jobs and make long-term investments. "And this plan must be designed in a new way - we can't just fall into the old Washington habit of throwing money at the problem." Burris Not Looking for Drama in D.C.

The Illinois Senate appointee tells the Chicago Sun-Times he will try to avoid making a scene when he comes to the Capitol Tuesday to claim the Senate seat. "There is no confrontation here, there is no antagonism here. And so we are proceeding very diplomatically, and we are proceeding with all concern about not creating any type of circus that will entertain the media." Permalink

Bush Wants Lasting Mideast Cease-Fire

The president says in his radio address Saturday any cease-fire in the region must be fully respected, Hamas rocket attacks on Israel stopped and the flow of smuggled weapons into Gaza cut off. Continues a hard line with Hamas, calling their attacks an "act of terror." Permalink

Report: Reid Pressed Blago Not to Appoint Jackson Jr.

Chicago Sun-Times: The Senate Majority leader called the Illinois Gov. to argue he appoint either state Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois AG Lisa Madigan. Also made it clear who he didn't want: Jesse Jackson, Jr., Danny Davis or Emil Jones. Permalink

Steinem Wants Kennedy to Run for House Instead

NY Post: The feminist icon says Gov. Paterson should appoint Rep. Carolyn Maloney to Clinton's seat and ask Kennedy to run for Maloney's House seat. "I think it's logical. In my own terms, it's logical in terms of the two records and a need for both of these women in Congress." Permalink

Burris Wants Court to Move Fast

The former Illinois Atty. General asks the Illinois Supreme Court to act swiftly on his request for justices to clear his path to the U.S. Senate. Hopes the court will force Illinois Secretary of State White to co-sign the petition Blagojevich filed with his office so he can be sworn in Tuesday. Permalink

Blago Loses Homeland Security Access

Chicago Sun-Times: The Illinois Governor's access to classified federal security information was revoked by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security after he was charged last month. Officials confirmed Friday the privileges were taken away. Permalink
