Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in politics for Friday, December 19.
1. Watch for another Obama press conference today. It’s the fifth one this week, this one at 2:15 pm ET is to introduce even more personnel choices. The president-elect is expected to announce Rep. Ray LaHood as his pick for transportation secretary, Rep. Hilda Solis for labor secretary and former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk for U.S. trade representative.
2. Watch the reactions to the auto bailout plan President Bush presented this morning. The Big Three automakers will get $17.4 billion in loans, saying that “allowing the auto companies to collapse is not a responsible course of action.” If the companies can’t turn around by the end of March, the loans will be called and returned to the Treasury.
3. Watch the continuing Caroline Kennedy drama. Someone dropped opposition research to the New York papers about her past failure to vote in some past elections. Watch to see if the identity of the person or group that leaked the information is revealed. Also watch to see if there’s any more information that comes out about her that tests her ability to take a punch.
