Mark Halperin’s three things to watch for in presidential politics for Thursday, November 20.
- Watch the continuing talks between the Obama and Clinton camps about whether Sen. Clinton will become secretary of state. A little bit of the bad blood between those two camps that we got used to during the election reemerged in the last news cycle over the ongoing talks. Watch to see if there’s any resolution on the Clinton matter today.
- Watch Rahm Emanuel up on Capitol Hill talking to Republicans in the House and Senate. One of the few failures of the Obama transition so far is that it has not been able to get Republicans on board for specific aspects of its legislative agenda. It’s something that Emanuel has excelled at on the Hill and at the White House. The transition team says it wants Republican lawmakers to know the White House is open to them. Watch to see if the incoming chief of staff can get Republicans invested in any part of what Obama wants to do in the early days of his administration.
- Watch Joe Biden today on his birthday. It’s a chance to point out that there’s been very little reported about what role Biden has played in some of the personnel decisions and early maneuvers of the Obama transition. Watch to see if reporters use Biden’s birthday as a peg to try to decode what’s going on in the relationship between the president-elect and the vice president-elect.
