Politics up to the Minute

Mark Halperin's Three Things

Article Tools

Mark Halperin's three things to watch for in presidential politics for Friday, August 15:
1) Continue to keep an eye on the situation between Russia and Georgia, still dominating attention in Washington. Watch to see how the two presidential campaigns deal with that today, on a day when both candidates are supposed to be out of the public eye.

2) Pay attention to John McCain's search for a running mate. The big float from the McCain campaign about the prospect of picking a pro-choice running mate has taken some fire from conservative leaders. Watch to see if anyone else comes out today to throw down the gauntlet. Watch closely as the McCain campaign continues to float that as an option, leaving prospects like Joe Lieberman and Tom Ridge in veepstakes contention.

3) Watch the build-up to Saturday's big event, when both Obama and McCain will gather at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church for an important forum. The event will air live from Lake Forest, California with roadblocked cable news coverage planned. Each candidate is scheduled to speak onstage with the Evangelical leader for approximately one hour; a coin flip has Obama going first. Rick Warren is doing a lot of advance press before Saturday's big event, including appearances on ABC's “Good Morning America” and CBS' “Early Show.” Watch to see what kind of build-up tomorrow's event gets today.
