Giuliani Takes McCain Out to the Ballgame

The presumptive GOP nominee visits Yankee Stadium with the former NYC mayor Sunday. Before the game, McCain, Giuliani and his wife went onto the field, chatted with Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Oakland A's manager Bob Geren. When asked what it's like to run for president, McCain said: "It's like being in AA (minor league baseball) and all of a sudden you're playing in Yankee Stadium." Permalink

Maliki Aide's Statement Came After U.S. Call

A White House spokesman says U.S. officials at the embassy in Baghdad contacted Maliki's office to express concern and seek clarification on his remarks seemingly supporting Obama's withdrawal plan. Following the call, an Iraqi government spokesman sent out a statement saying the comments were not "conveyed accurately," and they "should not be understood as support to any U.S. presidential candidate." Adds comments printed in German magazine Der Spiegel Saturday were "misunderstood" and "mistranslated." Der Spiegel stands by its version of the conversation. Read their transcript here. Permalink

Obama: "The Situation Is Precarious and Urgent Here in Afghanistan"

CBS chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan nabs the first overseas interview with Obama, portions air on Sunday's "Face the Nation." Obama reiterates his call for additional brigades to Afghanistan, says the U.S. should start planning for that now instead of waiting for the next administration. Watch video above. CBS' Couric will interview Obama Tuesday, ABC's Gibson goes Wednesday and NBC's Williams follows Thursday. CNN, Fox News also set to get interviews. McCain camp responds. Read it here. Permalink

Obama Lunches With Afghanistan's Karzai

The Illinois Senator holds talks, enjoys some chow with the Afghan President at the presidential palace in Kabul Sunday. They made no public comment. But an Afghan official said Obama pledged steadfast aid to Afghanistan and vowed to pursue the war on terror "with vigor" if elected. Obama has criticized Karzai in the past for not doing enough to rebuild his war-torn country. Earlier: Obama ate breakfast with soldiers at Camp Eggers in the city, praised the U.S. troops. The Secretary of State tells CNN's "Late Edition Sunday" that Obama's pending nomination shows that the U.S. has come a long way in race relations. Also insists she has told "everybody who will listen" she's not interested in the Veep slot. Permalink

Obama Camp Fills in Details on Berlin Speech

The campaign confirms Sunday morning that he'll deliver the major speech of his overseas trip Thursday afternoon in Tiergarten Park at the Siegessäule, or the Berlin Victory Column. He intends to discuss the need to strengthen Transatlantic relations to meet 21st century challenges. The event is open to the public, raising the possibility of a huge crowd. Permalink

Boston Globe: Obama 50-State Strategy Costly

The paper looks into the Obama operation, says "his campaign will need every penny of its $300 million goal to bankroll" a 50-state campaign with a massive army on the ground. Deputy campaign manager Hildebrand says there will be "large-scale operations in 22 states, medium operations in many others, and small staffs in only a handful of states." Permalink

McCain Burning Funds Ahead of Cap

Associated Press: FEC reports show McCain spent nearly $26 million on June, eroding his cash on hand from $31.6 million to $27 million. Because McCain is accepting public financing for the general, he has to spend all the money he raises between now and September's Republican convention. Permalink
