The Florida governor announces a plan to spend $1.7 billion to buy 300 square miles from U.S. Sugar, which would eventually go out of business.
The land would help restore water flow from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades.
Environmentalists praise the plan, which Crist calls “as monumental as the creation of the nation’s first national park.”
