The presumptive Democratic nominee says in morning press availability that he is “happy” to add debates to the general election schedule — but fewer than the 10 McCain originally proposed.

“If I’m not mistaken, we’ve gone back with a counterproposal to them, and are in communication with them right now.”

Earlier: McCain stresses the importance of one-on-one town halls during his remarks in Washington, D.C. Tuesday, says it would give them the opportunity to answer voters’ questions on the issues.

Adds: “To keep things friendly, I also suggested that my opponent and I travel to these town hall meetings together in the same plane.”
