Everglades Battle

McCain, Obama campaigns fully engage over McCain’s opposition to an Everglades preservation measure ahead of the Arizonan’s visit to the Florida landmark Friday.

McCain defends his position, saying the measure was part of “out-of-control” $23 billion water bill.

But the Obama camp says his facts are wrong. Read release.

Both camps hold dueling media calls:

On Obama’s: Rep. Gelber says “there’s no excuse” for having a “superficial understanding” of the bill. Former Sen. Graham says McCain ignored the “national responsibility” to the area.

On McCain’s: Rep. Diaz-Balart says the Obama camp is “distorting” McCain’s record, he never opposed the Everglades portion of the bill, just the rest of the pork in it. Accuses Obama of trying to take focus off his lack of national security creds.

Plus: McCain camp points the finger at Obama supporter Sen. McCaskill, who also opposed the bill, while the Obama camp highlights Diaz-Balart’s support for the bill. Obama camp responds on McCaskill hit here.
