Former DNC Leader Switches to Obama

Joe Andrew, superdelegate and former party chair under Bill Clinton, switches allegiance from Clinton to Obama. Encourages other Dems to “heal the rift in our party” and follow suit.

Says on media call that Clinton’s gas tax proposal was one reason he flipped, and says Obama has “inspired” him more than other politicians have in a long time.

Added he can be for Obama without being against Clinton, BUT said he didn’t tell the Clintons or Bayh in advance of announcement.

Also holds a news conference in hometown of Indianapolis to urge other Hoosiers to support Obama in Tuesday’s primary.

Response from Clinton spokesman Singer: “Joe Andrew’s point is that he thinks the process has gone on too long. To the contrary, this process has resulted in record turnout and registration.” Read full statement.
