Politics led ABC and CBS for the first time in several days.


ABC: Lead report looked at racial divisions in South Carolina Democratic race, noting polls showing Obama shedding white support and Edwards picking it up. Edwards said he’ll stay in race even if he places third on Saturday. GOP report showed Giuliani “fighting for his political life” in Florida, called Martinez’s McCain endorsement a blow to Giuliani.


CBS: Also led with Obama’s shrinking lead in South Carolina. Package focused on B. Clinton’s controversial role in the race, barely mentioning his wife. Former state Dem chief Dick Harpootlian said B. Clinton doesn’t understand boundaries, though David Axelrod said his efforts may be working. Report from Florida looked at the shadow Reagan is casting on the GOP race.


NBC: Led with Vegas fire, then turned to politics starting with a package on Obama’s fading support from white voters in South Carolina. In NBC interview, he said the “media is focused on race.” GOP package covered candidates courting Cuban-American vote, chronicled Romney-McCain leadership fight. Quick roundup of the candidates’ Iraq stances in a Baghdad piece. Series on candidates’ children continued with Cate Edwards, some of Romney’s sons.
